A Few Notes on Wars and the Doctrine of Sin
In the sermon this last week, I noted on Joshua 11:23, that “the land had rest from war,” only once great wars had been fought. It is, of course, important to note that the wars Joshua fought were of a very particular nature. God had given the land to Israel after giving the Canaanites over 400 years to repent from their sins. And the most important parallels and applications of the message of Joshua are to our spiritual struggles–against the devil, our flesh, and the world. In spite of this, there are broad principles which can applied to political and physical wars upon the earth as well. In light of the recent war led by the US and Israel against Iran, I thought it would be useful to offer some Scriptural thoughts on war generally, and how to think biblically about a war such as this. We will see in the observations that follow, that a doctrine of sin is crucial for a proper understanding. Firstly, warfare is inevitable in a world of sin. The greatest conflicts have, at their root, not political disagreement, but personal sins, often compounded and complicated by other factors. Even within Christian circles, a certain...Continue reading→
Joshua is Hercules?!
By far one of the most interesting and shocking parts of my study this last week was to read an extended and exceptionally erudite commentary on Joshua 10 by the great theologian Jonathan Edwards (Notes on Scripture) in which he argues that Joshua is the true and myth-inspiring character known eventually as Hercules. He writes, “This oriental Hercules (says Vossius), for some ages, more ancient than the Theban, was by his true name called Joshua, who made war with the Canaanites, amongst whom were the sons of Anak, and other giants, as Num. 13:29, 33.” Calling on a host of primary sources (many of them only in Latin), he builds a case for the fact that the account of Joshua and his great victory over the giants in Joshua 10 became corrupted, but some of its basic ideas continued in the ancient myths, including the gods raining down stones from heaven upon giants and a great man (Hercules) who slays the giants. “’Tis said of Hercules, that whilst he was fighting with the giants, Jupiter rained down stones. This answers exactly to the story of Joshua, his strenuous achievement, and God’s raining down stones, by which he slew great part...Continue reading→
Vows and the Strange Story of an Abstention from Coffee
“When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear” (Ec 5:4–7). [The following is a personal account from Pastor Paul] Some of you know that I do not drink coffee. It had been many years now since I have had a cup. This fact will sometimes arise in casual conversation, and someone will ask why not, assuming one of two things–either that I have some objection to the drink itself or that I have stopped because of a previous addiction or dependency. The answer is far more complicated and it illustrates, perhaps in a unique and rather strange way, the importance of keeping one’s vows, as noted in the sermon Sunday. I loved coffee. I probably...Continue reading→

Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for sinners means salvation, the hope of heaven, and a changed life for all who put their faith in Him.
The single most important event in the history of the world took place when Jesus died 2000 years ago and rose again on the third day. Because Jesus is fully man and fully God, His sacrifice on the cross for sinners means salvation, the hope of heaven, and a changed life for all who put their faith in Him.
